Sandefjord is one of Norways great whaling citys. This museum takes you on a journey through the whaling history of the city.
Sandefjord has long history of catching whales. The tooth in your room is from a whale.
One of the primary industries of Sandefjord and Norway in the past was its whaling industry. The whaling museum is a very interesting experience that shows how crazy amazing these people were, and how important this was for the Norwegian people as a whole. Here you can see live size replicas of whales and much more!
A very interesting museum retracing the history of whale hunting through several centuries, and denouncing the massacres performed in the first half of the 20th century. Kids will enjoy the display of arctic animals and the possibility to visit ships. Adults will learn a lot about the evolution of techniques through the centuries and how that led to large scale massacres of the worldwide whale population in the middle of the 20th century. Whale hunting was the main economic activity in Sandefjord and neighbouring city Tønsberg until hunting was stopped by an international moratorium 60 years ago. Open from 10am til 5pm every day.
